Retainers in Invisalign are small “buttons” made of composite (the same material as white fillings). They are routinely placed on some teeth during treatment with Invisalign in nearly all cases. The image shows the retainers adhered to the teeth.
Retainers are intended to optimise the movement of the teeth by causing the Invisalign aligner to “push” the teeth with the proper force in the proper direction. Retainers are placed with a retainer template that comes pre-made based on the treatment plan in the Clincheck software program. The image below shows the planning in Clincheck.
They are very small in size and a translucent white that mimics the colour of the tooth very well. They tend to go unnoticed and do not cause discomfort.
