When micro screws entered into general use it was a revolution for orthodontics on every level. Thanks to skeletal anchorages, micro screws and mini plates, we are constantly pushing the limits of orthodontics ever further.
I have recently received emails from various associates and friends in the profession asking me about how to attach wires to micro screws for the traction of an impacted canine, about which micro screws I use or what wire I use for the traction of an impacted canine, and so on. In this blog entry I will answer these questions.
I’m currently using micro screws from the JEIL brand, which has models with a range of different screw heads. For applying traction to an impacted tooth I use the JD and G2 models. The wire used must be beta titanium and of thickness 019×025, bent in the typical ballista spring shape and attached via a metal ligature to the head of a micro screw already set in the mouth.
The JD model is dual-top and has a head for a single bracket rather than a twin bracket.
The method for attachment to this type of micro screw is very straightforward, similar to that for normal brackets

The method for attaching a wire to JEIL’s JD model micro screw is the same as with any standard brackets.
The G2 model is dual-top, having a head with two grooves in the form of a cross and a hole going sideways through it.
Attachment method: this type of micro screw is attached by passing a metal ligature through the hole, then threading the wire through the eyelet that the ligature creates.

Attachment to a G2 model micro screw begins with the threading of a ligature through the micro screw’s sideways hole.

Once it has all been properly attached, a little bit of fluid composite is applied to the head of the micro screw in order to prevent irritation to the tongue and other mucous membranes in the mouth.
